Singer David Lutalo has opened up about the surprising roots of his musical journey, revealing that he started writing songs as early as Primary Three while growing up in Luweero in the 1980s.

According to the celebrated vocalist, he always knew he was destined for music, even though he hadn’t yet identified the exact style or signature sound that would define him.
As a young boy, he would creatively merge his own ideas into songs by legendary artists he admired.
“What I used to do was find another artist’s song and write my verse in it. The likes of Paul Kafeero, Mzee Ssebata, Basudde… At 10, I’d write strong lyrics waiting for my time,” Lutalo shared.
He explained that his early songwriting process involved “fusing his own words into their songs and singing along,” a habit that sharpened his lyrical skills long before he ever stepped into a studio.
Lutalo added that his current success doesn’t come as a surprise to him, because the signs of his talent were clear from childhood.
