Ugandan music star John Blaq has issued a warning to fellow artists about the dangers of prioritizing hits over the legal and business aspects of their careers.

Speaking candidly, John Blaq noted that many musicians get carried away by the excitement of releasing a potential hit, often overlooking the contracts they sign and the control they have over their own work.
“In most cases, we musicians get excited and want to land a hit song, and we forget that many things can come after that. There are many things we may not know as musicians, and you find some people taking advantage of that to manipulate you until you are left with nothing,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of understanding the finer details before releasing music, including who manages social media accounts, access to streaming platforms, and the terms of agreements with management.
“Before you think about a song, there are many things you have to consider. The contracts you sign, your logins, you have to make sure you have control over your own platforms. Because after the hit, you will start asking, who has my social media? Who runs my YouTube?” he added.
John Blaq advised that artists should sit down with their management teams to clearly outline responsibilities and rights from the very beginning.
“You have to agree on these things from the start, so you do not get a rude awakening three or four years later when you cannot reverse or fix certain things,” he cautioned.
