Singer Kapeke has expressed surprise over Eddy Kenzo’s second Grammy nomination, admitting that he had never even heard of the nominated song before the news broke.

Kenzo, who was nominated alongside Iranian-American musician Mehran Martin for their collaboration “Hope and Love,” has received mixed reactions from Ugandans — with many questioning how a song that seemingly went unnoticed locally could make it to one of the world’s most prestigious music awards.

Kapeke said the nomination took him completely by surprise.

“I was surprised too because I have never listened to that song. I grew up knowing the Grammy is a big nomination that comes with having a big song dominating the charts. The only song that Kenzo has that is worthy of a Grammy nomination is Sitya Loss,” he remarked.

The song “Hope and Love” has since come under scrutiny, with critics pointing out its low YouTube views and limited public recognition in Uganda. Many have argued that it was never a hit and have questioned the Grammy selection process.
