Singer Maureen Nantume has revealed that she stopped her daughter, Whitney, from pursuing a music career because of the tough realities she has witnessed in the industry.
Speaking in an interview, Nantume said her daughter had developed a strong passion for singing, but as a mother who has lived long enough in the entertainment scene, she felt the need to protect her from the harsh side of showbiz.
“I feared the industry and I couldn’t take the disrespect she’d get. I told her the truth about the industry and that she won’t manage different things and I continue to beg God that she doesn’t sing,” Nantume shared. “There are things you go through that you wouldn’t wish for your own child.”
The celebrated gospel and band singer added that her decision wasn’t only about the common issue of men disturbing female artists, but about many other challenges women in the industry silently face.
Nantume emphasized that while she’s proud of her music journey, she wouldn’t want her daughter to endure the same pain, disrespect, and struggles that often come with fame in Uganda’s music industry.
