Singer and songwriter Skies, born Namagembe Shena, has opened up about why being on stage as a performer matters more to her than working quietly behind the scenes as a songwriter.

Speaking in an interview with Horizon Vibe, Shena reflected on her journey in music and the moment she realized that singing and songwriting, though closely connected, are two very different paths. Early on, she admits, she believed every artist had to wear both hats.

When I started singing, I used to think that everyone who sings has to be a writer. I didn’t even think there had to be a distinction,” she said.

With time and experience, however, her perspective changed. Shena explained that once she understood the difference, it became clear where her heart truly belongs — performing as a musician.

But now that I know there is a distinction, and if I had to choose, obviously I would not be here talking to you if I did not want to be a musician,” she added.

To drive her point home, Shena used a powerful analogy, noting that even writing countless hit songs for a global superstar wouldn’t bring her the fulfillment she gets from being the one in the spotlight.

I can write over 10 songs for Beyoncé and still not be satisfied. No one who is behind someone will ever enjoy more than the person they are behind. Never,” she said.
