Rising songstress Tracy Melon has made it clear that while she draws inspiration from fellow musicians, she is not looking up to anyone in the industry as an idol.

Speaking during an interview on the Flexx show on Galaxy TV, Tracy addressed the mindset some artistes adopt when stepping into the studio — trying to outdo or sound better than someone else. According to her, that approach has never been part of her journey.

Me I just do my thing. Of course I listen to other musicians and I learn from them. I cannot say that I have never appreciated what another musician has done,” she explained.

The singer emphasized that the music industry is built on shared creativity, where artistes inevitably influence one another. However, she was quick to distinguish learning from copying.

I mean, we learn from each other. We do not necessarily copy. I will not say we copy, but you find that in the industry we are in, we do the same things. We sing the same lines, the same words. I could pick a line or a word from your lyrics,” she said.

Despite acknowledging the impact of other creatives on her craft, Tracy insists her ultimate goal is authenticity. For her, music is about staying true to who she is rather than trying to replicate another star’s formula.

All I can say is that I learn from very many people. But I cannot be there and say, let me do it like so-and-so, because at the end of the day, I want to be me,” she concluded.
