As Parliament’s Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) resumed the Bank of Uganda probe this morning, the committee chairperson, Abdu Katuntu dismissed reports that he approached the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, seeking extension of his term when it expires on January 13th.

Katuntu, who is also the MP for Bugweri County, dismissed the media narrative that he asked Kadaga to stay his office handover.

Katuntu claims that the idea to extend the committee tenure to February 20th,to allow the committee conclude its work, which includes investigation into the sale of seven commercial banks by the Central Bank, came from the Speaker herself, further saying he is not dying to head the committee.

While the Opposition FDC Party, which nominated Hon Mubarak Munyagwa as Katuntu’s replacement has spoken out sternly against the term extension, Speaker Kadaga has stuck to her guns, insisting that as custodian of the rules of procedure, she decided to let the committee leadership conclude the investigations and present the report.

Munyagwa, who is returning from India this Thursday, had threatened last week to “expose the real reasons why Kadaga is desperate to keep Hon Katuntu on the committee.”
