MTN Uganda, a leading Mobile Telecommunications company, has spoken out on circumstances under which its two senior officials were arrested and deported to their home countries, following a statement released today by police deputy spokesperson, Polly Namaye indicating that the duo had been deported for compromising national  security.

According to the statement by MTN Uganda, on Saturday, 19 January 2019, the MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer, Olivier Prentout, was “arrested by police at Entebbe airport upon arrival from a business trip abroad.”

The telecom company goes on to say that yesterday, the Head of Sales and Distribution, Annie Bilenge Tabura, “was arrested by unidentified security personnel upon arrival at the MTN headquarter offices, in Kololo, Kampala.”

The Police Deputy mouthpiece said the two officials “used their their employment as tools to achieve their ill motives”. “We strongly believe that the deportation of the two foreigners, who were using their employment as tools to achieve their ill motives, has enabled us disrupt their intended plans of compromising our national security,” she added.

MTN Uganda does not, in its  statement reveal why the  duo was arrested and deported  but assured its customers that together with all its employees, the company remains “fully committed to operating within and respecting the laws of the country.”

It’s important to note that Security officers last year raided MTN database centre in Mutundwe where they tried to retrieve confidential data, which the telecom said in a statement was out of order.
