The education ministry has rubbished claims that Uganda National  Examinations Board(UNEB) under marks some Kampala schools.

State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, said that such reports are baseless aimed at undermining UNEB’s image, adding that “my prayer is that this doesn’t get into our students’ minds because some will start relaxing”.

The minister also also called for ‘responsible’ use of social media , mainly by the youth, saying someone just sits on a cup of Malwa and comes up with a false story about UNEB that goes viral and is believed by many.

Minister Muyingo says good results are not a preserve of Kampala schools, but rather a result of hard work

“I have noticed that where as the parents actively participate in the education of their children, results are visible but if they stay back, things aren’t good. It’s too early to abandon children at this level,” he warns and that the performance would have been much better if parents played their role in the education of their children.

On social media allegations that UNEB under marks Kampala schools, Prof Okwakol says UNEB does not use a grading system that takes advantage of any category of schools in any part of the country.

Prof Okwakol said only one standardised marking scheme is used by all examiners in a particular subject. The board also adopted a conveyor belt marking system, where a candidate script is marked by a group of examiners.

Reacting to the On allegations of selective grading and under marking by Uneb, Education and Sports Minister Janet Museveni noted that ”it’s frustrating to hear that people that should know better are the ones inciting the population and making wild allegations. Says such a policy doesn’t exist and lacks logic”.  The minister added that government is committed to supporting the exam body to among other things strengthen exam security  and wipe out this vice .

She further asked parents to play their role in educating their children. “We also can never forget that there is a parent’s role in education. Some try though others do so by paying extra, keeping them at school for coaching which makes them so tired and causes them to just cram rather than understand,” minister Kataha says.

The results released indicated that 10.2% of the boys passed in division one, compared to 6.6% for the girls whereas in the second division, 18.1% (boys) passed compared to 13.9% for the girls.

According to the results, boys outsmarted their female counterparts at all the higher grades(from division one to division three) in the 2018 UCE exams. The female candidates however performed better than their female counterparts in English language despite being outsmarted in all other entry subjects.

The results also indicated that there was an increase in the number of candidates to 330,721 compared to 320119 the previous year in 2017 indicating an increase by 3.2%.
