The Democratic Party (DP) president general Norbert Mao has said that members of the party who were appointed in FDC strongman Dr Kizza Besigye’s people government need to decide on whether they still have interest in the party lest they face dismissal.
Speaking during a weekly press briefing on Tuesday at the party offices in Kampala Mao noted that the said people government is only aimed at disorganising other opposition parties and has so far fetched members from the Democratic Party.
Last week, Dr Besigye unveiled members of newly established cabinet termed as ‘’People’s Government Cabinet Assembly’ where he appointed the Lord Mayor for Kampala Erias Lukwago as the Deputy president and the Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze Bakireke appointed the information minister, both being members of the DP.
Mao said that he would have made the decision by himself but he has to follow the party constitution.
“This week the National council will hold a meeting and discuss about this matter.”
When asked if they were consulted by Dr. Besigye before making the appointments, Mao said “this one has not been discussed anywhere.”
While appearing on NBS TV after the appointments, Mukono legislator Betty Nambooze said Dr Besigye had consulted different opposition parties before unveiling his cabinet.
The party also hinted about the preparations for the Busoga reunion in Jinja today. The reunion has however since been blocked by police held today in Jinja. Heavily armed police officers backed with armored vehicles deployed at the rugby grounds by 7:00 am this morning to stop DP officials for erecting tents and a public address system for the event.
Police also stopped the organisers from carrying out a drive to mobilise the public for the event. The officers intercepted DP President, Norbert Mao who insisted that they had notified police about the reunion meeting.
Mao showed dissatisfaction with the Jinja area police claiming they have frustrated the preparations including impounding two pick trucks that were delivering public address systems.
“We have done everything were supposed to do and the police head quarters allowed us to proceed but the area police want to stop us.”
He said that this will not stop them from having the reunion because they know they are on the right track.
