Police in Mbarara is carrying out investigations into the embezzlement of over 100 million shillings from the Mbarara Municipality Bodaboda Movement Association.
Two suspected leaders are currently being held at police for allegedly swindling the money. The 100 million shillings was handed over as a donation to the association by President Museveni after a pledge in 2015.
Ben Muhwezi, the chairperson and Karigita Sulaiman, the association’s treasurer were arrested on Tuesday following accusations from Members of the association.
The members claim that they have always asked Muhwezi to account for the funds in vain.
However, Muhwezi has denied the allegations labeled against him and his colleague saying that the money was used to buy motorcycles that were given to the members.
He also insists that those complaining have refused to follow association procedures to access the money.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region Police spokesperson says that a case against the two officials was filed in September 2019 and since then investigations have been ongoing.
