The ministry of internal affairs has in the last month discharged over 83000 passports through the online process.

This follows the launch of the online application in December last year after the government announced that a manual passport system would be eliminated and effective December 31 all applicants had to apply for the same using the online process.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), Obiga Kania the previous system was a long and tedious process prone to delay, manipulation and a source of great temptation to staff and the public for corrupt tendencies.

Addressing journalists at the media center on Tuesday state minister for internal affairs Obiga Kania said the new online system has improved service delivery with 83233 passports issued as by 27th Jan 2020.

He said in the same period last year, December 2018 and Jan 2019 there were 15,000 passports issued.

Previously for one to obtain a passport they had to fill a form, attach photographs and associated documents, look for the signature of the recommender, and finally present the file to the Immigration Officer for manual processing.

The minister appeals to all Ugandans to embrace the system to avoid being conned or exploited.
