State Minister for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo says the ministry has already started sensitization and training on SOP’s for school authorities ahead of the reopening of schools and institutions of learning.
This follows the president’s directive during his COVID -19 address on Sunday, to have all candidate classes and finalists at higher institutions of learning to resume schooling on the 15th October 2020 but with strict SOPs.
Speaking before the education committee of Parliament committee Muyingo stressed that to guarantee readiness for the safe reopening of education institutions, the ministry has sensitized District Education Officers and managers of educational institutions on the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.
This comes after complaints from the education committee indicating that despite the directive to have them reopened; most private schools are already struggling with debt and cannot afford to manage with SOPs.
The chairperson of the committee Jacob Opolot and other committee members criticized the ministry for not considering the plight of private schools.
The ministry yesterday released a new school calendar showing the extension of the academic year to 2021.
It states that the second term resumes from October 15th to Mid December and the third term starts in mid-January to April 2020.
