With high cases of teenage pregnancies registered during the lockdown, many girls have been left in the dark with no hope of returning to school in the near future.

However, not all hope is lost after child rights activists have come out to pronounce the need for ballooned girls in their final year to return to school come 15th October 2020.

Girl Child Initiative Uganda (GCIU), an organization that promotes the rights of the girl child wants the government to allow pregnant students back to school.

Nickson Segawa, the executive director of the initiative, says much as a green light to reopening of schools is a good idea , it’s important to reconsider such girls because their pregnancies resulted from a long period of lockdown making them idle and vulnerable.

“With the prolonged stay out of school and without the support system of teachers and school administrators, many girls are left vulnerable to teenage pregnancy, early childhood marriage, and gender-based violence, among other devastating effects of Covid-19,” Segawa said.

He noted that the candidates and finalists should not be left to lose their valuable future as a result of being pregnant but should sit for their final exams so as to redeem their future.

“Educating a girl child is key to a thriving society, these girls should not be left out,” he said.
