President Yoweri Museveni says he will start his own investigations into the death of boxing champ Zebra Ssenyange, aka Mando.
The former national boxing team captain was fired multiple bullets on Wednesday morning around 1 am by unknown assailants a few meters from his residence in St Francis Zone, Bwaise III Parish in the Kawempe division.
He was laid to rest on Thursday in Masuulita village , Wakiso district.
Museveni was giving his New Year message on Thursday night when he revealed the real killers of Mando as the military.
After apologizing to the public for the horrible shooting carried out by his military team on an operation, Museveni vowed to unearth the truth behind his killing.
“I specifically decided to take on his case and I have so far found out he was killed by security personnel. I am very sorry, so sorry about this. I will bring my entire findings to the knowledge of the family. I am very sorry.”Museveni said.

He however says Mando was thought to be part of a criminal gang working underground to train chaotic youths to wreak havoc in the public.
“I am still investigating elements that caused this tragedy. Information was received that this unfortunate young person (Ssenyange) was training boxers who would then be used by some people to attack civilians. I got some information of how some of the youths trained by him were involved in controversy over a taxi park in that area,” Museveni said.
He says Mando defied arrest by escaping the military guys at his home on duty which could have contributed to his death.
“The security people had gone to take Zebra and ask him some questions. When they got to his home at 12:03 am, they knocked but the people inside didn’t open. Zebra was in the sitting room but instead went behind the house. Apparently, he climbed over the fence and went some distance away and bumped into the other people and that is the controversy. Soldiers say when they stopped him he refused and tried to fight them. He was shot twice and died.”Museveni said
He says being an NRM mobilizer in Bwaise, he had made plans to host Mando for a talk before he was murdered.
