Celebrations are underway to mark the Janam Luwum day which was designated as a public holiday in 2015 by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Janani Luwum was presiding over Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-Zaire.
He was martyred in Kampala under the command of the former president Idi Amin’s regime on February 16, 1977.
On February 5, 1977, Soldiers under command of one Ongom broke into Luwum’s house on Namirembe hill, searched the house, and allegedly abused the family of the archbishop both physically and verbally.
Luwum delivered a note of protest to president Iddi Amin over arbitrary killings, unexplained disappearances, and brutality by the regime.
The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kazimba, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, is the chief preacher on the day’s theme, “Life in Its Fullness,” from John 10:10.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is gracing the 44th Janani Luwum day celebrations at the statehouse.
