Burundi, Kenya Ban Maize Imports

Just days after neighboring Kenya banned imports of Maize, Burundi has decided to follow suit by banning all maize grain and flour imports from entering the country for the next 6 months.

The Burundian government made the decision after establishing fears that poor and unhealthy maize being imported into the country was harmful to its population.

Burundi’s minister of commerce made the announcement, saying effective 8 March 2021, for the next 6 months, no further maize imports would be allowed in.

“While this grain and flour is being rejected by neighboring countries… we need to make sure that it does not enter the country,’’ said Jeremie Banigwaninzigo, the permanent secretary in Burundi’s ministry for commerce and tourism.
