The Uganda Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga has warned the public especially boda boda riders to stop undressing female criminals on the streets.
Enanga’s word comes after two women were stripped nude and thrown into a trench after locals netted them in a taxi robbery incident along the Northern bypass on October 05, 2022.
Enanga explains that the two were part of a gang of four suspects who attempted to rob a passenger who had boarded their taxi Reg No. UBD 071P (White in colour) but their luck ran out when she made an alarm, attracting civilians and motorists along the high way.
The concerned citizens nabbed four suspects including Ssenyange Benjamin,30, a hawker and resident of Wakiso; Kanyinze Jonas 18, a hawker and resident of Namugoona; Busingye Everlyne 30, a bar maid from banda village and Namyalo Mercy 30, a house maid in Kibuuye.
He further explains that the motorists mostly boda boda riders forcefully stripped off the women’s clothing before ordering them to open their legs wide for pictures.
“If you look at the manner in which these four suspects were stripped naked, the two male suspects were undressed and dumped in the swamp but for the women, it was utterly disgraceful and barbaric. Some were glorifying the nakedness of these women, asking them to spread their legs and take photographs,” said Enanga.
It is these ugly scenes that attracted the attention of women’s’ rights activists who publicly condemned the acts and demanded action against the culprits. Enanga says police stands with those activists and members of the public in condemning striping of female suspects naked.
He says under whatever circumstance, women should be treated modestly because some of them are mothers and grandmothers. He adds that a separate file has been opened of attempted murder and indecent assault on the suspects accused of mob action on the suspected criminals.
According to Enanga, undressing women is slowly becoming a habit by the boda boda movement.
“Another woman was arrested in down town on allegations of robbing from a supermarket and the Boda boda movement ganged up on her and started making fun of her.” he added
