Outspoken human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza has finally tasted freedom after weeks behind bars.
High Court judge Justice Michael Elubu granted Kiiza bail, but not before slapping him with a UGX 20 million cash bond and ordering him to surrender his passport, meaning, for now, he’s grounded.
The legal firebrand had three people standing surety for him, each locked into a UGX 50 million non-cash bond. They include; Dr. Busingye Kabumba a Makerere University lecturer and Kiiza’s cousin, Primah Kwagala a Lawyer and Executive Director of the Women’s Probono Initiative and Sylvia Tumwebaze , Kiiza’s wife and a top official at Hima Cement.
Kiiza had been cooling off at Kitalya Min-Max Prison, serving a nine-month sentence slapped on him by the General Court Martial over contempt of court. But his legal team fought back, arguing that a military court has no business convicting civilians and the High Court agreed, giving him a shot at appeal.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) wasn’t happy, trying to block the bail request, but Justice Elubu ruled otherwise.
