Senior Six candidates began writing the UACE examinations today, with thousands across the country tackling Government, History, and Physics papers.
UNEB confirmed 166,402 candidates are registered, up 14.6% from last year, including 28 prisoners from Luzira Prison. Arts students wrote poetry and literature, while science students focused on Physics Paper 2 this afternoon.
521 candidates with special needs are receiving support, including braille papers, sign language interpreters, and extra time.
Jennifer Kalule, the UNEB spokesperson warned that anyone involved in cheating or malpractice faces up to 10 years in prison, while scouts and field personnel could get five years if irregularities occur under their watch.
“I want to caution the public against involvement in any form of malpractice. Anyone apprehended will be dealt with in accordance with the UNEB Act, with penalties ranging from 5 to 10 years’ imprisonment.” she said
She added: “All our field personnel, including scouts and regulators, are reminded that if malpractice occurs under their supervision, they will be held responsible under Section 261G of the Act, which carries a maximum of five years imprisonment.”
Journalists have been told not to cover exam materials directly, and UNEB has set up toll-free numbers for whistleblowers.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report malpractice through our toll-free numbers. Informers will be protected under our whistleblower policy.” she said
Adding that: “We request media personnel not to cover examination material at distribution points or inside examination rooms, as this may constitute tampering and is an offence.”
