Prison walls could not stop education as 70 inmates, including 4 women, kicked off their UACE exams today, Uganda Prisons confirmed.

Spokesperson Frank Baine praised the smooth conduct of the exams and thanked families and prison staff for supporting the candidates. “We continue to wish them success in their exams,” Baine said.

The announcement comes after a successful run of PLE and UCE exams for inmates, showing that even behind bars, education remains a priority in Uganda.

Across Uganda, 166,402 candidates are taking the UACE exams.

UNEB reports that exams are happening smoothly in 2,844 centres, with 1,650 scouts and security personnel ensuring order. The number of candidates is up 14.6% from last year.

Among them are 521 students with special needs, including those requiring sign language interpreters and Braille papers.

Baine meanwhile revealed that the total prison population has now reached 78,959 inmates.

“We currently have 42,193 convicts and 36,134 remands, together with 632 detainees, bringing the total to 78,959 prisoners,” Baine stated.

He added that prisons also accommodate 303 children living with their mothers in detention.

These inmates are housed in 269 prison facilities across 19 regions, supervised and managed by 14,925 Uganda Prisons Service staff.
