Crown Beverages and Cahaba Eco Crew Launch PET Collection Centre in Kasese to Strengthen Plastic Waste Management
Crown Beverages Limited, the licensed bottler of Pepsi products in Uganda, has today launched a PET collection centre in Kasese in partnership with Cahaba Eco Crew. The initiative marks a significant step in strengthening plastic waste management systems in Western Uganda and advancing a more circular approach to PET use and recovery.
The new collection hub will serve as a central point for aggregating used PET bottles from communities, waste collectors and local businesses. By formalising collection and linking it to recycling channels, the project aims to reduce plastic leakage into the environment while creating economic opportunities within the community.
Badru Mugisha, Director of Cahaba Eco Crew, emphasised the shared responsibility required to address plastic waste.
“Turning plastic waste from a burden into a resource is the responsibility of every community. This partnership with Pepsi is enabling us to build a hub where collection meets circularity,” he said.
He added that the partnership with Pepsi is also an example to other manufacturers to extend producer responsibility and move beyond just meeting the consumer need with the products they make.
Through this collaboration, Cahaba Eco Crew will oversee local mobilisation, community engagement and operational management of the hub, ensuring that collection efforts are consistent, transparent and impactful.
Rogers Anguzu, Commercial Manager at Crown Beverages Limited, underscored the company’s responsibility as a manufacturer of PET products.
“As manufacturers of PET products, we are churning out tons of it each and every day. It is our duty therefore to do our part and partner with companies like Cahaba in ensuring that we do proper plastic waste management and recycling as opposed to creating a danger for our environment. This is how we make sure that future generations also get to enjoy not only our products but also the environment in which they live,” he said.
The Kasese PET collection centre aligns with Crown Beverages’ broader sustainability agenda under the Tweyambe project, which focuses on responsible production, environmental stewardship and community empowerment. By investing in structured collection systems, the company is reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that the packaging it introduces to the market is effectively recovered and recycled. The launch in Kasese is expected to enhance local awareness around waste segregation, increase PET recovery rates and support the development of a more resilient recycling value chain in the region – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT1X9bTTH6A&t=22s
