Police in Mityana District have arrested a teacher accused of severely assaulting a Primary Seven pupil at Nalyagonja Bright Way Junior School in Kalangaalo Sub-county.
The suspect has been identified as Bukenya Fredrick, 28, a resident of Nalyagonja village in Kalangaalo Sub-county.
According to the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Lawrence Kigozi, the teacher allegedly administered excessive corporal punishment to the pupil after accusing her of stealing Shs5,000 and a mathematical set from a fellow learner.
Police say the suspect reportedly ordered the victim to return the items she had allegedly stolen before tying her up and beating her severely, causing bodily injuries.
The matter was reported to Central Police Station (CPS) Mityana by a relative of the victim, prompting police to open investigations.
The pupil was taken for a medical examination, while the parents were advised to seek appropriate treatment to facilitate her recovery.
SSP Kigozi said the suspect is currently in police custody and will be produced in court upon completion of investigations.
Police have condemned the incident and reiterated that excessive corporal punishment and violence against learners is illegal and punishable under the law.
