Police in Kassanda are hunting for a mysterious woman pulled off a chilling hospital crime by stealing a helpless 3-day-old baby from Kiganda Health Centre IV.
The suspect, described as calm and convincing, allegedly dressed and behaved like a trained medical worker, fooling everyone in the ward.
The baby girl, born just days earlier, had been rushed to the facility after developing complications. She was admitted to ICU, fought through the critical stage, and was finally improving.
Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region Police Spokesperson says by March 14, hope had returned as the baby was moved to the postnatal ward, waiting to go home.
But that hope quickly turned into a nightmare. On March 15, the fake nurse walked into the ward like she owned the place, flipping through patient files, checking beds, and speaking with authority.
Then she reached her target. She picked up the baby, studied her notes, and told the mother the child was suddenly getting worse and urgently needed medicine.
To make her lie believable, she even pulled out Shs10,000 and handed it to the mother, ordering her to rush to the pharmacy.
According to Lameck, desperate to save her child, the mother ran out. Moments later, the woman had disappeared. And so had the baby.
The ward was thrown into chaos as the mother returned to an empty bed.
He says that police have since launched a manhunt, warning that the suspect could still be moving within Kassanda or beyond.
He has called on residents to be alert and report any suspicious woman found with a newborn baby under unclear circumstances.
