A 20-year-old security guard is behind bars after appearing in court over a mysterious fire and cash theft at a forex bureau in Kampala.
Abraham Opedun, who works with Safetec Security Company Ltd, appeared on Wednesday, 18 March 2026 before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Chief Magistrate Ritah Neube heard that Opedun and accomplices still on the run allegedly set Sinai Forex Bureau on fire at Nyumba Kubwa building in Arua Park on 5 November 2025.
Prosecutors say the suspects also made away with $396 and more than Shs15.2 million, plus $7,400 from Sitima Dina and $349 from Kakune Harriet.
Opedun denied all charges.
Court heard that investigations are still ongoing and more arrests could follow.
Magistrate Neube ruled that the seriousness of the arson charge, considered a semi-capital offence, complicates bail.
The suspect was remanded to Luzira Prison and will return to court on 1 April 2026.
