Christopher Okello Onyum, the man accused of heartlessly stabbing to death four babies at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Center on April 2, has been committed to the High Court for trial. The decision comes after the State confirmed that investigations are complete, and a medical report declared him of sound mind, despite previous claims of mental illness.
Court documents reveal that Onyum was found in possession of two American passports, two mobile phones, two laptops, a US driving permit, a sanity medical form, and a certificate of good conduct, raising questions about his background and international connections.
He now faces four counts of murder, one for each of the toddlers killed in the horrific attack.
Onyum appeared before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday this week, where he was formally charged with the murders of Gideon Eteku (2), Keisha Agenrwot (2), Ignatius Sseruyange (3) and Ryan Odeke (2).
Onyum, aged 38 and a resident of Kyanja, Nakawa Division, Kampala, was charged before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court under Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act. The magistrate noted that the court lacked jurisdiction to try capital offences and therefore committed him to the High Court.
He was also told that the State would provide him a witness to aid in his trial process.
Prosecutors told court that investigations are nearly complete, prompting his committal to the High Court, which has jurisdiction over capital offences like murder.
Police said the suspect gained access to the daycare by posing as a parent where he paid admission fees before the sudden attack that shocked the nation. He used the opportunity to attack the minors who were out in the school’s playground for break time. The security guard and local residents intervened to stop him as he attempted to flee the scene after the damage had already been done.
