Dramatic scenes unfolded in court as the trial of Christopher Onyum Okello, the man accused of brutally killing four toddlers at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, got underway with emotional testimony from witnesses.
Okello (39), has dramatically denied all charges as his murder trial officially began before the High Court sitting in Kampala under a rare Mobile Court session.
He now faces four counts of murder, contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act.
Okello appeared on Monday before Lady Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha at the specially designated court venue at Ggaba Community Church grounds, where tight security and large crowds marked the start of one of the most closely followed criminal trials in recent memory.
The accused is facing four counts of murder arising from the deaths of toddlers Eteku Gideon, Keisha Agenrwot, Ryan Odeke, and Ignatius Sseruyange, who prosecutors say were killed on April 2, 2026 inside the daycare centre.
So far, over three witnesses have testified before the High Court session presided over by Lady Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, with the postmortem reports of the four children also read out in court.
The most emotional moment came when Stella Apolot, the mother of one of the victims, Gideon Eteku, took the stand as the first prosecution witness.
As she narrated the painful circumstances surrounding the death of her young son, Apolot became overwhelmed with emotion.
Moments after completing her testimony, she collapsed in court and fainted, sending shockwaves through the packed courtroom.
Court officials and people present quickly rushed to assist her before she was attended to.
Her testimony formed part of the prosecution’s evidence against Christopher Onyum, who is accused of stabbing to death four toddlers at the kindergarten in Ggaba, Kampala.
Earlier in the proceedings, the court heard postmortem findings for the four minors, detailing the injuries that caused their deaths.
Okello, however, has denied the charges, maintaining a not guilty plea to the four counts of murder.
The highly watched trial is being conducted under a Mobile High Court session in Ggaba, with hundreds of residents following proceedings from the designated court venue.
The case continues as the prosecution calls more witnesses to testify in the tragic case that has deeply shaken the Ggaba community. The case is expected to proceed until Friday this week.
