A wave of financial contributions has been announced in Parliament as leaders pay tribute to the late Helen Nakimuli, with millions pledged by the President, MPs and political parties in support of her family and child’s education.

During a special sitting of the Parliament of Uganda, Speaker Anita Annet Among revealed that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni contributed UGX 20 million, while the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus and the National Resistance Movement each gave UGX 10 million.

Speaker Among also added her personal contribution of UGX 10 million, while Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa contributed UGX 5 million, and Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua added UGX 1 million.

In a touching gesture, the Speaker announced that she had, through Bukedea Comprehensive School, cleared school fees for Nakimuli’s child up to Senior Four. She said this followed a message from Kibuli Secondary School regarding the child’s education needs.

Parliament further confirmed that it will meet all burial expenses, while the cash contributions will directly support Nakimuli’s child.

In a related development, Sports Minister Peter Ogwang moved a motion for the Parliamentary Commission to deduct UGX 500,000 from each MP to support the education of Nakimuli’s daughter. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja also moved a motion for Parliament to formally honour Nakimuli, recognising her service, advocacy for island communities, and contribution to national development.

Nakimuli, who joined Parliament in 2021 on the National Unity Platform ticket, previously served as Community Development Officer in Kalangala District (2013–2020). In Parliament, she served as Shadow Minister for Agriculture and later Shadow Minister for ICT and Anti-Corruption.

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi said her legacy should inspire stronger systems and accountability, noting that she consistently stood for transparency and gave a voice to island communities.

MP Muhammad Nsereko also paid tribute, praising her service and commitment, while ICT Minister Chris Baryomunsi urged the public to avoid disrespectful online reactions during moments of national mourning.

Nakimuli has been remembered across party lines as a dedicated legislator, advocate for vulnerable communities, and active voice in Parliament’s service and sports activities.
