A security breach at the Bank of Uganda has heightened tensions in Kampala, coming at the same time police are carrying out arrests in city arcades over alleged dealing in stolen property.

The central bank confirmed that unknown individuals broke into its headquarters along Kampala Road near City Square and stole seven laptop computers in an overnight incident.

According to the bank statement, the unlawful entry targeted the shorter tower building located between Church House and the East African Development Bank offices. Management, however, assured the public that core operations remain fully functional and were not affected.

As investigations into the break-in continue, police have simultaneously arrested several suspects from Kampala arcades following public complaints about the trade in stolen electronics.

The operations were conducted in areas including Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza, City House and Kalungi Plaza.

Poloice say the suspects are being held on allegations of dealing in stolen property, particularly electronic devices.

While the timing of the arrests coincides with the Bank of Uganda break-in, police have not confirmed any direct link between the two developments.

Investigations into both the burglary at the central bank and the arcade operations are ongoing, with security agencies expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.

The developments have nonetheless drawn fresh attention to security concerns in Kampala’s central business district and the persistent problem of stolen goods circulating in urban markets.
