Police in Kampala have reacted to a viral and disturbing video showing a violent boda boda robbery at the Nsambya Traffic Lights along Ggaba Road, confirming that detectives have launched a full-scale investigation into the attack.
The incident, which happened on May 6, 2026 at around 11:30 a.m., took place at one of the busiest junctions connecting Nsambya, Ggaba Road, and the city centre in Kampala.
The footage resurfaced on June 9 and quickly spread across social media, sparking panic among residents and boda boda riders who say the area has increasingly become a hotspot for street attacks.
Police say they immediately moved in after the matter was reported, with officers visiting the exact scene at Nsambya traffic lights, interviewing witnesses, and gathering evidence from the busy roadside location.
Investigators also pulled CCTV footage from nearby shops and buildings along Ggaba Road in a bid to trace the movement of the attackers before and after the robbery.
Preliminary information shows that a group of assailants ambushed victims who had just withdrawn money from a forex bureau before robbing them in a swift attack and fleeing into traffic.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that police are actively pursuing leads and working to identify everyone captured in the viral video.
He urged the public, especially boda boda riders and residents around Nsambya, to remain vigilant and report any information that could help investigations.
Police say the hunt for the suspects is ongoing as detectives continue to reconstruct the exact movements of the gang around the Ggaba Road corridor.
This video release comes amid growing concern over rising boda boda-related crime, with reports of increased thefts, robberies, and mob justice incidents linked to the largely unregulated sector.
Recent incidents have heightened public alarm, including the death of national rugby player Sydney, who was reportedly attacked by people said to be connected to the boda boda industry.
