Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has overseen the discharge of the last Ebola patient admitted at Mulago National Referral Hospital following the outbreak reported in May.

Uganda recorded 20 cumulative Ebola cases, with 17 recoveries, one patient still admitted in an isolation unit and two deaths.

The Ministry of Health said five cases were locally acquired with four being health workers, while 15 were imported, including cases linked to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Baryomunsi said the discharge of the last patient does not mean Uganda is yet Ebola-free, as the country must complete a 42-day period without new infections before the outbreak is officially declared over.

He added that Uganda continues to work with the DRC to strengthen surveillance and prevent further spread of the disease.

The DRC has since recorded over 2000 infections and registered 700 deaths..
