Veteran opposition politician Kassiano Wadri has been handed a new political assignment after the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) appointed him as its National Coordinator, placing him at the centre of the party’s efforts to rebuild and strengthen its structures countrywide.
ANT announced Wadri’s appointment on Tuesday, saying the experienced politician will lead efforts to transform the party’s organisation and push its political agenda across Uganda.
The appointment comes at a time when ANT is seeking to revive its grassroots networks and increase its visibility following the 2026 General Elections.
The party said Wadri’s long political experience will be valuable as it works to promote what it describes as issue-based politics, accountability and democratic governance.
Wadri is no stranger to Uganda’s opposition politics. He has spent more than 20 years in Parliament, first representing Terego County before later winning the Arua Municipality parliamentary by-election in 2018 as an independent candidate.
His Arua victory became one of the most talked-about political contests in recent years after he won the seat while he was in detention, defeating several candidates in a tightly contested election.
Before joining ANT, Wadri was a member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), where he held influential positions in opposition politics.
He later crossed to ANT in July 2020, saying he identified with the party’s principles and had been part of discussions that shaped the formation of the party alongside its founder, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu.
Beyond politics, Wadri is a trained social worker with academic qualifications from Makerere University and Uganda Martyrs University.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and Social Administration, a Master’s Degree in Social Sector Planning and Management, and an Associate Degree in Democracy and Social Development.
During his parliamentary career, Wadri served as Opposition Chief Whip, a position that placed him at the centre of coordinating opposition activities in Parliament. He also chaired the Committee on Government Assurances, which monitors government commitments.
ANT believes Wadri’s political experience, parliamentary background and knowledge of opposition organisation will help the party strengthen its nationwide structures.
He takes over from Alice Alaso.
