A viral video showing armed police officers firing bullets into the air in Kampala has sparked public attention, but the Uganda Police Force says the shots were not aimed at people, they were fired to control a violent crowd during an operation.

Police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma on Wednesday explained that the incident happened on Monday evening, July 20, at Original Kiseka Spare Centre in Kiseka Market, Nakivubo Cell, Kampala CBD.
According to Kituuma, security officers had gone to the area to arrest suspected offenders when some people allegedly turned violent and tried to block the operation.
As tensions rose and the crowd became unruly, officers fired warning shots into the air to disperse the group and restore calm.
The police spokesperson said the move helped officers regain control of the situation, allowing them to complete the operation and arrest two suspects.
Kituuma said police had taken note of the video circulating on social media and wanted to clarify that the shots were fired as a damage control measure during the confrontation.
The incident comes amid growing public attention whenever security operations are captured on camera and shared online.
Police reminded members of the public that while citizens have a right to observe security operations, interfering with lawful arrests or obstructing officers can lead to legal action.
Authorities said further details about the arrested suspects and the operation would be provided as investigations continue.
