Police in Kampala have recovered 11 suspected stolen mobile phones and arrested one suspect during an intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected phone theft network operating between Kampala City Centre and Kansanga.
The operation was conducted by officers from Kabalagala Police Division in Kasanga Parish, Makindye Division, on the night of July 23, 2026, following information that individuals dealing in suspected stolen phones were operating in the area.
During the operation, police recovered eight iPhones, two Samsung phones and one Itel phone. The devices had reportedly been wrapped in foil paper, a method police say is commonly used by criminals to interfere with network signals and make tracking difficult.
Police arrested Nakitende Mariam, who has been charged with possession of suspected stolen property. Another suspect escaped during the operation and is currently being pursued.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the recovered phones and trace their rightful owners.
Members of the public who lost their phones have been encouraged to report to Kabalagala Police Division with proof of ownership for verification and possible recovery.
Police said the operation is part of wider efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in mobile phone theft and illegal trade in stolen devices.
The force added that it is strengthening surveillance and deployments in crime hotspots, including Arena, Muyenga and Tank Hill Road, while increasing foot patrols and community policing engagements through public sensitisation meetings.
