Purpose of the role:
The Agriculture Officer will provide technical leadership and field-level coordination for the implementation of climate-smart agriculture interventions under the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project. The position is responsible for promoting sustainable agricultural production, climate resilience, food security, and livelihood improvement among refugee and host communities through the adoption of climate-smart agricultural technologies and practices. The Agriculture Officer will support farmers, farmer groups, extension workers, and community structures to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen resilience to climate-related shocks.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Applicants must possess: A Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from a recognized institution.
Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years of practical experience in Climate Smart Agriculture programming.
- Proven experience working in a refugee settlement and host community context.
- Demonstrated experience implementing agriculture, food security, or livelihoods projects.
- Experience in agricultural extension services, farmer training, and community mobilization.
- Experience working with development partners, NGOs, or humanitarian organizations will be an added advantage.
Required Skills and Competencies
Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) approaches and technologies.
- Knowledge of crop production, agronomy, soil and water conservation, and agroforestry.
- Understanding of agricultural extension methodologies and farmer field school approaches.
- Experience in training and capacity building of farmers and community groups.
- Knowledge of food security and livelihood programming.
Core Competencies
- Excellent planning and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multicultural and refugee settings.
Communication Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong report writing and presentation skills.
- Ability to facilitate training and community meetings effectively.
Computer Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Knowledge of digital data collection tools is an added advantage.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The Agriculture Officer shall be assessed based on:
- Timely implementation of planned agricultural activities.
- Number of farmers adopting climate-smart agricultural practices.
- Improvement in agricultural productivity among project beneficiaries.
- Quality and timeliness of project reports.
- Strengthening of farmer groups and community structures.
- Effective engagement of refugee and host communities in project interventions.
- Lead the implementation of climate-smart agriculture activities in target refugee settlements and host communities.
- Promote adoption of climate-resilient crop production technologies and sustainable farming practices.
- Support establishment and management of demonstration plots, farmer field schools, and learning sites.
- Facilitate dissemination of improved agricultural practices and technologies.
- Provide technical support on soil fertility management, conservation agriculture, water harvesting, agroforestry, and climate adaptation measures.
- Support farmers in improving crop production, post-harvest handling, and food security practices.
- Organize and conduct training for farmers, community groups, extension volunteers, and local stakeholders.
- Mobilize and strengthen farmer groups, cooperatives, and producer organizations.
- Promote community participation and ownership of project interventions.
- Facilitate knowledge-sharing and peer-learning sessions among beneficiaries.
- Support the integration of refugee and host communities into agricultural livelihood interventions.
- Ensure equitable access to project resources and services among targeted beneficiaries.
- Promote social cohesion through joint agricultural activities involving refugee and host populations.
- Work closely with settlement leadership structures and local government officials to ensure effective implementation.
- Collect and maintain accurate data on project activities, outputs, and outcomes.
- Conduct routine field monitoring and beneficiary follow-up visits.
- Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly progress reports.
- Document success stories, lessons learned, challenges, and best practices.
- Support project assessments, surveys, and evaluations.
- Liaise with district agricultural offices, local authorities, NGOs, and development partners involved in agriculture and livelihoods programming.
- Participate in coordination meetings and technical working groups.
- Support collaborative planning and implementation with project partners and stakeholders.
- Ensure project activities comply with organizational policies, donor requirements, and government regulations.
- Promote environmental sustainability and climate resilience in all project interventions.
- Adhere to safeguarding, protection, gender, and inclusion principles during project implementation.
