The Statistician will support the Global Health Security (GHS) Department by providing advanced statistical expertise for designing, analysing, interpreting, and presenting data related to infectious disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness and response, and health systems resilience. The ideal candidate will collaborate with epidemiologists, data scientists, public health specialists, and both national and subnational partners to generate actionable evidence for decision-making in the prevention, detection, and response to public health threats.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement statistical methodologies for analysing data related to disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, AMR, and health system capacities.
Support the development and application of early warning systems and epidemic forecasting models.
Lead or support sample size estimation, power calculations, and statistical modelling for GHS research studies and evaluations.
Conduct complex data analyses using R, STATA, Python, or other statistical tools, ensuring robust and reproducible outputs.
Collaborate in the design of surveys and assessments related to IHR (2005), Joint External Evaluations (JEE), intra-action and after-action reviews, and simulation exercises.
Support the visualization and interpretation of statistical results for technical and non-technical audiences.
Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, policy briefs, scientific manuscripts, and presentations.
Enhance the capacity of national teams in statistical analysis and data utilization for outbreak detection and response.
Maintain high standards for data quality, ethics, and confidentiality in all activities.
Academic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
Recent graduate with GPA of 4.0 and above from a chartered university.
Person Specification
Strong understanding of statistical concepts such as regression, time series analysis, mixed models, or Bayesian inference.
Demonstrated ability to translate statistical findings into practical policy recommendations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
