​​UNICEF continues its support to the Government of Uganda to accelerate progress for children, work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and help children in Uganda realize their rights under the Convention on the Rights of Children. UNICEF in Uganda is in first year of implementing the Government of Uganda – UNICEF Uganda Country Programme 2026-2030 and there is an urgent need to communicate the progress, impact and results of these interventions externally to government counterparts, donors, partners, the UN family, media, private sector, communities and families including adolescents – boys and girls.

​ ​To communicate the results through public facing materials in English, UNICEF Uganda seeks services of professional writers and editors to support with writing and editing services. The consultants will support the development of new content through writing and refining already written products in a consistent and coherent manner and in line with UNICEF’s style book, brand book, publication guidelines and any other guidance provided to support the execution of the tasks

How can you make a difference?

Scope of work:

As a writer and editor, you will provide high‑quality editorial support to UNICEF Uganda, producing clear, compelling, and impactful communication materials. You will be responsible for writing, editing, copy‑editing, and reading a wide range of external communication products—including donor and visibility materials, reports, situation reports, studies, fact sheets, brochures, leaflets, human‑interest stories, web articles, manuals, journals, survey summaries, programme evaluations, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, briefing notes, and campaign materials. You will also support additional writing and editorial tasks as needed. Your work will play a critical role in strengthening UNICEF Uganda’s knowledge management, ensuring the production of high‑quality communication and advocacy products that advance the rights and wellbeing of children.

​The contract resulting from these Terms of Reference will cover a pre-agreed period of time, and a maximum level of expenditure set by UNICEF. Against that ceiling, UNICEF will issue, from time to time, specific requests to the contractor to provide services within the scope outlined above. These assignments will be described in detail in Work Orders to be issued by UNICEF.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

Degree in communication, journalism, creative writing or similar discipline.

Work Experience:

Degree in communication, journalism, creative writing or similar discipline.

At least 5 years’ experience in the field of writing and editing including proven experience in writing, editing communication materials, and understanding editorial processes.

Experience in undertaking similar work or projects

Skills:

Demonstrated ability to produce high quality creative communication materials for public consumption.

Excellent command of written English including spelling, punctuation and grammar

Ability to meet tight deadlines and work schedules

Familiarity with UNICEF’s work and children’s issues, UNICEF’s reporting, writing and storytelling guidelines.

Ability to synthesize complex documents into scripts where needed and simple public facing materials.

Language Requirements:

English
