World Vision Uganda is seeking to partner with Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries(MAAIF) to implement the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP) in the refugee settlements in northern Uganda (Adjumani or Lamwo).

The Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project seeks to transform agricultural production systems among refugee and host communities through climate-smart agriculture while strengthening resilience, livelihoods and food security.

To implement this project, World Vision Uganda is prepositioning staffing needs, who will be on standby for hire, dependent on WVU being awarded the consultancy.

Purpose of the role:

The Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Officer will provide technical leadership and coordination in the planning and implementation of sustainable land management interventions under the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project. The position is responsible for promoting climate-smart land use practices, ecological regeneration, environmental conservation, natural resource management, and energy-saving technologies to improve agricultural productivity, ecosystem resilience, and sustainable livelihoods among refugee and host communities.

The Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Officer will support communities to restore degraded landscapes, improve soil health, strengthen climate resilience, and promote environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems.

Responsibilities or duties

Key Result Areas:

Sustainable Land Management and Ecological Restoration

  • Lead the implementation of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) interventions in project target areas.
  • Promote climate-smart land use practices aimed at improving soil fertility, water conservation, and ecosystem restoration.
  • Support landscape restoration and ecological regeneration initiatives in degraded areas.
  • Facilitate the adoption of soil and water conservation technologies among project beneficiaries.
  • Promote conservation agriculture practices to enhance productivity and resilience to climate change.
  • Support the establishment of agroforestry systems and climate-resilient farming models.

Natural Resource Management

  • Promote sustainable utilization and management of natural resources within refugee and host communities.
  • Support community-based natural resource management initiatives.
  • Develop and implement environmental conservation and rehabilitation activities.
  • Promote watershed management and catchment protection interventions.
  • Facilitate restoration of degraded land through tree planting, revegetation, and sustainable land-use planning.

Climate-Smart and Energy-Saving Technologies

  • Promote the adoption of climate-smart agricultural technologies and practices.
  • Support implementation of energy-saving technologies including improved cookstoves, fuel-efficient technologies, and alternative energy solutions.
  • Facilitate training on renewable energy and environmentally sustainable technologies.
  • Promote technologies that reduce pressure on forest resources and improve household resilience.

Capacity Building and Community Engagement

  • Train farmers, community groups, extension workers, and local leaders on sustainable land management practices.
  • Organize farmer field schools, demonstrations, exchange visits, and community sensitization programs.
  • Strengthen community structures responsible for environmental conservation and land restoration.
  • Promote participation of women, youth, refugees, and vulnerable households in SLM initiatives.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

  • Collect, analyze, and report data on sustainable land management and environmental restoration activities.
  • Conduct regular field monitoring and technical support visits.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports.
  • Document best practices, success stories, innovations, and lessons learned.
  • Support project evaluations, environmental assessments, and impact studies.

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Collaborate with government departments, environmental agencies, NGOs, research institutions, and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in project coordination meetings, technical working groups, and environmental forums.
  • Establish partnerships that support sustainable land management and climate resilience objectives.
  • Liaise with refugee settlement authorities and district local governments to ensure smooth project implementation.

Compliance and Safeguarding

  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements, organizational policies, environmental regulations, and government guidelines.
  • Promote gender equality, inclusion, safeguarding, and environmental sustainability throughout project implementation.
  • Ensure all project activities adhere to environmental and social safeguards.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Education

  • Applicants must possess a Bachelor's Degree in any of the following disciplines from a recognized institution: Agriculture, Soil Science, Land Management, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Forestry
  • Additional training in Climate Smart Agriculture, Sustainable Land Management, Environmental Conservation, Climate Change Adaptation, or Natural Resource Management will be an added advantage.

Experience needed

Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in Sustainable Land Management (SLM) programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing ecological regeneration and landscape restoration initiatives.
  • Proven experience promoting energy-saving and climate-smart technologies.
  • Experience working in refugee settlements, host communities, or humanitarian settings will be an added advantage.
  • Experience implementing donor-funded environmental conservation, climate resilience, or agricultural development projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in community mobilization, capacity building, and stakeholder engagement.
