Four idol men are rotting in Nagalama Police cells after cops nabbed them with fake MTN recharge cards syndicate.
Police say they were arrested for allegedly forging MTN airtime cards.
Cops named them as; Benin Biraaro, Robinson Muheki, Simon Bwambale and Isaac Akankwatsa.
Police has been trailing the suspects for over seven months before being apprehended. This follows a number of cases of aggravated robbery reported by victims.
According to the investigators, it is alleged that the suspects specialize in printing fake vouchers popularly called recharge cards from Democratic Republic of Congo, seal and then send them to Uganda through Kihihi a small town in Kanungu District, approximately 30 kilometres, by road from the border to be distributed to unsuspecting victims.
The scam was unearthed after a number of complaints reported at police about robbers who pose as dealers in recharge cards.
Police believe the suspects setup meetings with potential buyers, negotiated favourable prices and at the day of paying for the merchandise they turned up with armed personnel and robbed the unsuspecting buyers at gunpoint.
Cops say there are several suspects still on the run, however, that they are working with other security agencies to stamp out the scam.
Police recovered Ushs 112.5 million worth of fake airtime recharge cards and the suspects are currently detained at Nagalama Police Station as investigations are ongoing.
