A 24-year-old man narrowly survived being lynched by an angry mob after he was caught red-handed stealing money from a dead passenger ,following the gruesome accident that occurred at around 10:00pm last night at Namasoga village along Iganga highway.
Angry locals, who accused youths in the area of turning it into a habit of stealing money from passengers involved in accidents , pounced on Yasin Nyombi and beat him up with sticks and bricks after he was caught picking money from the dead passenger.
According to police, at least 7 people died and over 10 others ,including children ,were admitted in critical condition after a taxi registration number UAV 157E they were traveling in to Jinja collided head-on with a coaster, registration number; UAT 805F that was from Iganga.
An eyewitness, Abdul Kiyambe, said that the taxi driver, Badru Lunobe Isabirye was trying to overtake a trailer, but he ended up colliding with the coaster.
“I was riding on my motorcycle, but I saw Lunobe overtaking a trailer from the left-hand side on a high speed and when he joined the other lane, the coaster was already close and they collided,” he said.
Another eye witness, Farouk Kiiza, a boda boda cyclist at the Namasoga stage said the driver of the taxi rammed onto the coaster vehicle as he tried to overtake a tractor that was heading to Jinja.
The officer in charge traffic Rogers Ndenge attributed the accident to speeding, recklessness on the part of the taxi driver, adding that Namasoga village is a black spot for accidents due to the sharp bend.
Bodies of the deceased fell on the tarmac after the entire roof top of the taxi was blown off.
The deceased were identified as Akamada Maganda, Musa Kange, Falidi Matende, John Baliruno, Badru Lunobe Isabirye; driver of the taxi and Abdalah Bogere; the driver of the coaster.
The injured who sustained broken legs, hands and had deep cuts all over their bodies were identified as Gerald Lugolole, Joel Mutukula, Kulusumu Issa, Asha Naigaga, Saleh Kaziba, Francis Mayende, Kanani Yona, Mukanza Mudasiru and are currently admitted at Iganga and Jinja hospitals in critical condition.
