As Ugandans ushered in the New Year, Streets, bars and churches were full of merrymakers as they welcomed the New Year.
In between the merry making, the unfortunate also happened. Expectant mothers fled Naguru hospital following a power outage. Naguru hospital is one of three hospitals that serve the Kampala area together with Kawempe and Kiriddu as part of government’s referral system.
According to sources at the hospital that preferred anonymity, the hospital was covered in darkness at around 9:00 pm, forcing some women to seek medical services from other government medical facilities.
The hospital, however, has standby generators, but according to patients they were not switched on and power was only restored at around 11:00 pm.
A Boda Boda cyclist identified only as Yonasan who operates at a stage outside the hospital says that he transported two women from Naguru to Kawempe hospital after the power outage. He explained that the first woman he transported to Kawempe Hospital was losing her child.
Dr. Lawrence Kazibwe, the deputy executive director Kawempe Referral Hospital acknowledges that they received many women from Naguru hospital, but couldn’t reveal the exact number.
When our reporter visited the hospital, no guard or medical personnel was at the premises.
MEANWHILE, At least five people were rushed to hospital after sustaining injuries in a stampede at Pastor Aloysius Bugingo’s church in Kampala.
According to Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) publicist, Irene Nakasiita, thousands of worshippers were gathered at Canaan Land Church in Makerere and the five cases were referred to Mulago Referral Hospital’s casualty section.
She didn’t reveal the victims, citing privacy reasons.
Meanwhile, at least two people have been attacked by thugs at Garden City.
The URCS rushed the victims in an ambulance to Mulago hospital.
The situation in Entebbe was calm by press time. However, the traffic was overwhelming with crowds gathered all over to have fun.
Fireworks were visible at Sky Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, Pearl of Africa Hotel and Mestil Hotel, lighting up the city’s skyline.
ON ANOTHER SAD NOTE; Unknown assailants killed a money lender in Bwaise, Kampala last night. John Kayemba was found dead at around 11 pm near his home in Bwaise.
The Kampala Metropolitan Area Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says that Kayemba’s body was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital for post mortem.
Owoyesigyire also says that an 8 -year old girl Esther Namagembe and her grandmother Annette Nakintu were electrocuted Mukono District. It is alleged that after bathing, Namagembe reportedly touched an electric fence that had been installed on a neighbour’s perimeter wall. However, Nakintu rushed to rescue the girl but was also electrocuted.
Owoyesigyire says that the police are hunting the owner of the wall fence for interrogation.
