Makerere University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has said the sacked university staff who petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga are ignorant of procedures.

A section of 47 university staff that were expelled or suspended last year from the university petitioned the speaker to investigate their dismissal and other contested issues at the institution.

The staff were disciplined by the Appointments Board for cases ranging from absconding from duty, failure to complete studies, financial fraud, assault and actions prejudicial to the university image, negligence from duty and insubordination.

Addressing the media today, Prof Nawangwe said the staff should have petitioned the Makerere University Staff Appeals Tribunal instead of exhausting the speaker who has a plate full of national matters to address.

Nawangwe’s methods of work in management decisions have come under criticism from a section of university staff, who have since said accused him of being  a dictator, accusations he dismisses.

Asked to comment on claims that he is a dictator, Prof Nawangwe said that staff crying foul over his methods of work were used to impunity and are finding it hard to live in a controlled institution.
