Police in Kaliro are holding Steven Balangaile, the LC I Chairperson of Bumanya village in Buyinda Sub County over mob justice.

It is alleged that Balangaile together with his friend, Wilson Babeli raised alarm calling upon residents to lynch, Joel Liira a UPDF soldier who was riding on a motorcycle registration number UEE 540 J.

Residents thumped Liira and vandalized his motorcycle before he was rescued. Balangaile reportedly got a sack of charcoal and tied it around Liira’s back before rushing to file a case of theft at Bumanya police post where he was arrested as a prime suspect.

Liira was rushed to Buyinda health center IV with severe injuries. He told URN on his sick bed that Balangaile got furious after spotting him with his daughter whose names have been withheld.

David Aggii, the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department at Kaliro central police station, says investigations into the matter are ongoing.

He condemned the tendency by “some of these village chairpersons usurping a lot of authority and being the main catalysts of mob justice in the district.”
