Makerere University Management has started engaging the leaders of various associations to end the current stalemate at the institution.  Addressing journalists this afternoon, the acting Makerere Vice Chancellor, Dr. Eria Hisali said that management met the leadership of three associations in the morning.

The leaders were drawn from Makerere University Academic Staff Association-MUASA, Makerere Administrative Staff Association-MASA and the National Union of Education Institution (NUEI). He however, says they didn’t reach a conclusion because the association leaders were meeting Makerere University Council Chairperson, Lona Magara.

The university teaching and non-teaching staff announced a strike at the weekend protesting the suspension of their leaders by Makerere Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe. They are also calling for the removal of Bruce Kabasa and Ruhinda North MP, Thomas Tayeebwa from the university council.

The university management has since Saturday insisted that the university is operating normally, with the vice chancellor threatening a headcount, further warning that staff who go on strike will also be suspended. However, Associate Prof. Edward Nector Mwavu, MUASA Vice Chairperson insists that they will not be intimidated

However, our reporter found the university offices open but no lectures were going on.  Yesterday, the guild president Papa Wilson Were said they are to meet tomorrow over the stalemate, adding that they will not remain stranded, miss lectures and look on as the strike continues.
