Dr. Eria Hisali, the Makerere University acting vice chancellor, says they have set up a team to look at the MUASA grievances and it will report back in 3 weeks. He adds that they also request members of MUASA to call off the strike at the university.

Meanwhile, drama ensued at the University when students presented a cake to the suspended MUASA chairperson, Dr Deus Kamunyu.

The cake which had “Suspended by Nawangwe” inscribed on it, was presented to Kamunyu at the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

The students who also launched a campaign dubbed “Where Is My Suspension?”, sang the Makerere Anthem as they presented the cake also prayed for Dr.Kamunyu and all other suspended staff, asking them to remain strong in such moments as long as their fight is legitimate.

The students accuse the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe of gagging intellectual debate at the university.

Danson Twesigomwe, the Makerere Students Guild Clerk accused the university management of suppressing free speech by suspending individuals with dissenting voices.

Kamunyu, who was suspended on January 17, 2019, on allegations of inciting staff and indiscipline asked the students to remain calm in whatever decisions they take and bring strikes to an end.
