The Hoima District LC5 Chairman Kadri Kirungi has strongly condemned the forceful eviction of residents and burning down of more than 50 houses in Rwensambya village, Buhanika sub-county over alleged enchroachment on land measuring about two square miles.

On Monday a group of about 15 men believed to be court bailiffs backed by police stormed Rwensambya village to evict over 100 families settling on a disputed land. They burnt houses and destroyed crops including cassava, maize and Banana plantations leaving residents homeless.

The residents have for the past ten years been battling for the land with five people who are claiming ownership. They are Keloyi Kiiza, Moses Kahwa, Dick Rwesemereza, Deo Agaba, Augustine Bisoborwa, Alex Abitekaniza and Innocent Ayesiga.

Now, Kadri Kirungi says that the security committee of the district of which he is a member did not meet to discuss the eviction.

Moses Besigwa one of the affected residents explained that he has lived on the contested piece of land for the past six years but wonders the manner in which they are being evicted.

It’s important to note that in December 2018, President Yoweri Museveni issued a directive stopping the eviction of lawful and bonafide occupants without approval from the Lands, Housing and Urban Development Minister.
