Parliament today spent about one hour debating the controversial Miss Curvy contest which has since last week brewed mixed reactions from members of the public.
The Miss Curvy contest is reportedly fronted by state minister for Tourism Godfrey Kiwanda in a bid to boast and attract tourists in the country.
During the debate which divided the House, majority of MPs including female MPs backed Kiwanda for the initiative that targets curvy and bootilicious women unlike Miss Uganda beauty pageant that targets slim ladies.
The debate climaxed after Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa who also doubles as Kiboga Woman MP took to the floor of Parliament and flaunted her body in support of the Miss Curvy Contest.
MP for Persons with Disability for Eastern region Hellen Asamo appreciated the initiative and wished that there is also a pageant for the disabled persons just like there is Miss Albino. She said that ‘Miss Disabled’ contest will provide an opportunity for males to appreciate the beauty of the disabled.
Kasilo County MP Elijah Okupa urged fellow MPs to support minister Kiwanda to promote tourism rather than frustrating every little effort he has put in to boast the sector.
This however did not go well with Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal among others. The former Miss Uganda tasked Kiwanda to apologise for degrading women to mere tourist attraction. Mp Beatrice Anywar was also among those against the contest
In his statement, Kiwanda supported his move, saying that it was not his own initiative or that of the ministry to organize Miss Curvy contest but rather the idea of a group of women who asked him to preside over the contest. He added that the contest is not meant to use curvy women as tourist attraction but appreciate their beauty.
Recently, Anne Mungoma, the chief executive officer of Miss Curvy Uganda said that over 140 well-endowed women have registered for the contest set for June.
