Speaking at the release of the results , UNEB executive secretary Dan Odongo said a total of 99,576 students registered for 2018 UACE, 41,296 are females(compared to 41,932 in 2017) from 2,217 centres across the country. The gap between males and females taking the examination is still wide with a ratio of 42:58.
The number of candidates registered for the 2018 UACE reduced by 2,335 compared to the 102,007 candidates who sat for UACE exams in 2017.
Out of the 98,524 students who sat for the 2018 exams, at least 95,839 have qualified for the award of the UACE.
According to the results, 36,656 students have passed with three Principal passes, about 26,467 have been able to attain two principal passes, 20,413 with one pricinpal pass while 12,303 have attained one subsidiary.
A total of 1,489 students have failed after attaining F-grade in last year’s exams and therefore have to resit UACE. In 2017, a total of 1,141 failed the exams.
Odongo said girls performed better, especially in arts subjects. However, overall, Biology was the worst done subject.
“History, Economics, Entrepreneurship Education, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Arts have shown better performance than in 2017. Geography improved at the A-Pass level. CRE, Literature in English, Agriculture and Biology showed a decline,” Odongo said.
According to him, good performance was exhibited by candidates from mainly the traditional government schools and some of the better established private schools.
“These candidates demonstrated adequate knowledge of the subject matter,” he said.
