Anti-riot police have fired teargas to disperse striking Kyambogo University students who are protesting a policy that requires all students to have cleared tuition by the 12th week of the semester or risk an automatic dead semester.
The new regulation mandates that all students should have paid up by 29th of March unlike the previous flexible rules that allowed them to pay late.
A Number of students are said to have been injured. One of the disturbing photos posted on social media shows one of the students’ hand terribly shredded reportedly by a bullet. Other reports indicate that he was picking up a tear gas canister to throw it back at the Police before it exploded in his hand.
Students are still engaged in running battles with Police.
Efforts to get a comment from management and police were futile as Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire said he had no details and would get back to us as soon as possible.
