The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Jinja District in eastern Uganda are still searching for the body of their colleague who was gunned down by a junior officer on Tuesday afternoon and dumped in River Nile.
Private Jonan Katusiime then committed suicide after shooting dead his unit commander,Sergeant Peter Ouma.
It is alleged that private Katusiime and Sergeant Ouma attached to the marine brigade has for long been engaged in endless arguments. It’s said that the bad blood was caused by Ouma’s refusal to grant Katusiime a pass leave.
Katusiime shot Ouma at around 12:00 noon at the old Jinja bridge . He then disarmed his other four colleagues, put them on gun point and forced them to flee the UPDF camp.
The situation remained tense for close to three hours as Katusiime refused to surrender, forcing UPDF and police officers to restrict traffic at the bridge until 3:30 pm, when a UPDF armored vehicle attached to Magamaga military barracks, cordoned off the area.
On seeing the armored vehicle, Katusiime shot himself twice in the stomach, dying instantly.
His body was taken to Jinja regional referral mortuary for postmortem. The Jinja zone army spokesperson, George Musinguzi confirmed.
